How Many Calories in 50g of Makhana? (318 kcal per 100g, FSSAI method)

A 50g pack of plain roasted makhana contains about 159 kcal. Per 100g the figure is 318 kcal, calculated using the energy conversion factors that FSSAI requires on Indian food labels.

How the calorie figure is calculated

Energy on an Indian food label is not measured in a calorimeter. Under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, it is calculated from the declared macronutrients using fixed conversion factors. Applying them:

Why some sources say 347 kcal instead

You will find 347 kcal per 100g quoted widely online. That number comes from the USDA database, which uses the general Atwater system and applies 4 kcal/g to all carbohydrate, including fibre. India’s labelling rules treat dietary fibre separately at 2 kcal/g, because most of it is not metabolised the way starch is.

Makhana is unusually high in fibre — 14.5g per 100g — so the two methods diverge by around 29 kcal. For a product sold in India, 318 kcal per 100g is the correct figure. The 347 figure is not wrong, it simply follows a different convention.

What 159 kcal actually looks like

A 50g pack is a generous bowl — roasted makhana is very light for its volume, so 50g fills far more space than 50g of most snacks. That same pack carries 4.9g of protein and 7.3g of dietary fibre, and effectively no fat at 0.05g.

For reference, published generic values put fried potato crisps at roughly 530–540 kcal per 100g and most fried namkeen higher still, largely because frying adds 30g or more of oil per 100g. Plain roasted makhana has nothing added but heat. These comparison figures are generic reference data, not values tested for MAKHANZA products.

Does flavouring change the count?

Yes. The figures above are for plain roasted makhana with no seasoning. Flavoured variants, and products where makhana is one ingredient among several — cookies, noodles, pasta — carry their own declared values on pack. Always read the panel on the specific product rather than assuming the plain figure carries across.

This question comes up constantly, so here are the figures — and a clear statement of what we are not saying.

Published glycemic index values for makhana generally fall in the low-to-moderate range, though figures vary between studies and with preparation. Frying or sweetening changes the picture entirely.

What we are not claiming

We are not saying makhana treats, prevents or manages diabetes. Under Indian food regulation we would need approved substantiation to make a claim like that, and we do not hold it. Anyone who tells you a snack manages a chronic condition is overselling.

What is fair to say

Makhana is a whole seed, dry-roasted rather than fried, with fibre intact and no added sugar in its plain form. Whether that fits your diet is a question for your doctor or a registered dietitian who knows your numbers — not for a snack company.

Algal DHA — Vegan Omega-3, Explained

Fish do not produce DHA. Algae do. Fish accumulate it by eating algae, and it concentrates up the food chain. Taking DHA directly from microalgae gives the identical molecule without involving fish at any point.

Same molecule, different route

Docosahexaenoic acid from algae and from fish oil are chemically the same. What differs is everything around it — algal DHA is grown in controlled fermentation rather than harvested from the sea, so it carries no risk of mercury or other marine contaminants, and no fishy odour.

Why it matters in India

A large share of Indian households are vegetarian, and omega-3 has historically meant fish oil capsules. Algal DHA removes that conflict — it is genuinely vegetarian and vegan, with no compromise on the molecule itself.

Where ours comes from

Our algal DHA is supplied by Primas Bioscience, a biotechnology company founded by a team from IIT Madras, with a facility at Perundurai in Tamil Nadu. Keeping the supply chain inside the state makes it short and traceable.

Where Does Indian Makhana Come From?

Roughly nine out of ten makhana in the world come from Bihar. It grows in the shallow ponds of the Mithila region — Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia, Katihar and Saharsa.

How it is harvested

This is the part most people never see. Makhana grows on the bed of a pond under two to three metres of water. There is no machine for this. Divers go down repeatedly through the silt, collecting seeds by hand, one pass at a time, over weeks.

The seeds are then sun-dried, graded by size, roasted in sand at high heat and popped by hand with a wooden mallet. Almost none of that has been mechanised. When a pack says hand-harvested, it is being literal.

The GI tag

In 2022 Mithila Makhana received a Geographical Indication tag, formally recognising Bihar as its origin — the same category of protection as Darjeeling tea or Alphonso mangoes.

Why we say Bihar and Chennai

Our makhana is grown and popped in Bihar. It is then brought to Chennai, where it is roasted, flavoured and turned into noodles, pasta and cookies in an FSSAI-certified facility. Two states, two halves of the process — we would rather name both than imply we grow it ourselves.

Makhana vs Popcorn — An Honest Comparison

Makhana carries more protein and almost no fat. Popcorn is cheaper and higher in fibre per calorie. Neither is simply better — they suit different moments.

Air-popped popcorn is closer on protein than most makhana marketing admits. Where makhana separates itself is fat — 0.1g against roughly 4g — and that gap widens sharply once popcorn is buttered or microwave-popped.

The realistic comparison

Almost nobody eats plain air-popped popcorn. Cinema and microwave popcorn arrive with oil, butter flavouring and salt, often at 25–30g of fat per 100g. Roasted makhana is dry-roasted, so it starts and stays low.

Where popcorn wins

Cost. Popcorn is a fraction of the price per gram, and it always will be — makhana is hand-harvested by divers, popcorn is combine-harvested maize.

Is Makhana Gluten Free?

Yes. Makhana is naturally gluten free. It is the seed of Euryale ferox, an aquatic plant, and contains no wheat, barley or rye protein of any kind.

Why the question comes up

Makhana is often sold beside grain-based snacks and is sometimes described loosely as a “grain”. It is not one. Botanically it is closer to a water lily seed, which is why it is also permitted during grain-free fasting.

Plain versus processed

Plain and roasted makhana are gluten free. Once makhana becomes part of a made product, it depends entirely on what else is in it:

  • Gluten free — raw makhana, plain roasted makhana, flavoured roasted makhana (check the seasoning)
  • Contains gluten — our Makhana Pasta uses durum wheat semolina, and our Makhana Noodles use a millet-wheat blend

We would rather say that plainly than let “makhana product” imply gluten free across the range.

For coeliac disease

Naturally gluten free is not the same as certified gluten free. If you are managing coeliac disease, check the pack for cross-contamination statements and speak to your doctor or dietitian — shared production lines matter more than the ingredient itself.

Raw vs Roasted Makhana — What Is the Difference?

Raw makhana is the plain dried seed after popping. Roasted makhana has been heated until crisp and is ready to eat. Both are the same seed; the difference is the last step.

Raw makhana

Soft and slightly chewy straight from the pouch, with a neutral taste. It is an ingredient rather than a snack — used for kheer, curries, roasting at home in ghee, or grinding into flour as a thickener. It keeps longer because there is no added oil to go rancid.

Roasted makhana

Crisp, nutty and ready to eat. Roasting drives off residual moisture, which is what produces the crunch. Once roasted it should be kept sealed — makhana pulls moisture from the air quickly and goes soft.

Does roasting change the nutrition?

Not materially. Roasting removes water, so figures per 100g shift slightly upward simply because there is less water in the same weight. Protein and fibre are not destroyed by dry roasting. What does change nutrition is what gets added — oil, salt, seasoning.

Which should you buy?

Buy roasted if you want to open a pouch and eat. Buy raw if you cook, or if you like roasting it yourself with your own ghee and salt — many households prefer that, and it is cheaper per gram.

Can Omega-3 Survive Baking?

Ordinary omega-3 oils do not survive baking. Encapsulated thermostable DHA does. This is the reason omega-3 is rare in baked foods, and the reason a DHA cookie is harder to make than it sounds.

Why plain omega-3 fails

DHA is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. Those double bonds are what make it valuable and also what make it fragile — heat and oxygen break them down, which is why fish oil turns rancid and why omega-3 usually arrives in a capsule rather than a biscuit.

What changes with encapsulation

A thermostable premix wraps each droplet of algal DHA in a protective coating. The coating holds through the oven and releases the DHA during digestion instead. The premix MAKHANZA uses is rated above 180°C — comfortably beyond normal baking temperatures — and the coating is biodegradable.

Does it taste of fish?

No. The DHA is from marine microalgae rather than fish, and the encapsulation prevents the oxidation that causes fishy odour in the first place.

How much survives

Typical loading in a cookie format is 50mg of DHA per 100g, measured in the finished product rather than the raw mix. The figure on the pack is what is left after baking.

Yes. Makhana is permitted during most Hindu fasts. It is the seed of an aquatic plant, Euryale ferox — not a cereal grain — which is why it has been eaten during vrat for centuries.

Which fasts

Makhana is commonly eaten during Navratri, Ekadashi, Shivratri, Karva Chauth and Janmashtami. In most households it sits alongside sabudana, singhara flour, rajgira and fruit as an accepted vrat food.
